Training and workshops on basics of self-defense for girls (HERO)

Initial situation / problem statement

My friends and I as girls often do not feel safe when it is dark or there is no one outside. One of my close friends this summer was stalked to her house and this person even tried to get to her house. Another girl from my school was stalked for more than 3 weeks till she did not try to ask her brother to talk and when they consulted with policy their told her 鈥淗e has not done anything to you, come when something will happen.鈥 After such accidents, girls feel unsafe and not confident in everyday life.听 I am motivated to implement this project because my friends and I faced these problems and every girl could meet them every day. I am motivated to work on the empowerment of girls for making little changes and increase the level of awareness about these problems.

听Target group

The target group for this project is girls between 17 and 21 from 6 or 11 micro-district. I choose these districts because these districts were chosen for creating a project 鈥72 cameras鈥. Now on these districts have been implemented a project 鈥淪afe district鈥 by the District Department of Internal Affairs and they have implemented more than 72 cameras and lighting. The group will consist of 10 to 15 girls.

The selection of girls would conduct from two stages:
1) They would fill out a survey, where I can identify where they live, why they want to participate, and how we can prevent stalking and dangerous situations.
2) While conducting interviews I will count geographical, community, and households targeting and by collecting data I will choose a focus group.

These girls live in 6 or 11 micro-district, come home later and have a low level of confidence, and feel unsafe. After the HERO project, they would be able to handle difficult situations, become mentally stronger and confident. They would want to participate in this empowerment program to become a part of the civic engagement community, to learn how to defend themselves, to feel confident. I have conducted several interviews among the target group and identified that girls are more open to working with me as a project manager because as a female representative and fellow. It is also important that our trainer has worked before with girls and that would lead to a comfortable atmosphere for them.
