On October 9-10, 2024, Shakhzoda Mirakova, a student at the ӰƵ University of Central Asia, proudly represented Central Asia at the prestigious High-Level Youth Event in Brussels, Belgium. As the only delegate from her region, Shakhzoda took on the critical responsibility of voicing the unique perspectives and concerns of Central Asian youth on a global platform. The event, organized by the European Union, brought together young leaders from around the world to discuss the role of youth in shaping future international partnerships and policies.
Throughout the two-day event, Shakhzoda actively contributed to finalizing recommendations for the Youth Action Plan, which were later presented to Jutta Urpilainen, the EU Commissioner for International Partnerships. This moment marked a significant achievement as youth leaders, including Shakhzoda, directly communicated their ideas and visions for change to high-level policymakers.
In addition to her work on the Youth Action Plan, Shakhzoda had the opportunity to connect with other passionate young people who are leading grassroots initiatives globally. She gained insights into the challenges within their communities and countries. A statement during one of the panel discussions – “There are approximately 1.2 billion young people globally, and there is no way you can silence us” – struck a powerful chord with her, reaffirming her drive to continue her advocacy.
During her panel, Shakhzoda highlighted the need for youth inclusion in policymaking, stating, “There is a place for everyone in policymaking, especially for young people.” She reflected on her journey, from initially feeling disconnected from policy discussions to becoming a strong advocate for youth involvement in decision-making. Now, as an AUCA student and young leader, she aspires to empower others new to the field, helping them learn how to influence policies that shape their lives and communities.
Shakhzoda’s participation at this high-profile event serves as a beacon of hope for more Central Asian voices to join global networks and contribute to critical conversations. She expressed deep gratitude to EU Partnerships, the Youth Team, and the EU Delegation in Uzbekistan for giving her this platform and supporting youth leadership.
Through her efforts and dedication, Shakhzoda Mirakova not only proudly represented Central Asia and AUCA but also inspired others to step forward and actively engage in their communities and on international stages. Her experience at the High-Level Youth Event underscores the importance of youth voices and the vital role young people play in shaping the future.
